Skipper Travel Story to Namibia

We left home in Everton early on 5th May, voted at Augrabies Falls, and arrived at Ai-Ais on the 8th May via Onseepkans Border Post. Travelled from Ai-Ais via Helmeringhausen to Sossus Oasis Campsite at Sossusvlei over 212km of very bad gravel road! From Sossusvlei via Solitaire to Swakopmund arriving there on 17th May.

Dear Robbie and Team,

Just wanted to give you a bit of a report back on our recent trip to Namibia:

We left home in Everton early on 5th May, voted at Augrabies Falls, and arrived at Ai-Ais on the 8th May via Onseepkans Border Post. Travelled from Ai-Ais via Helmeringhausen to Sossus Oasis Campsite at Sossusvlei over 212km of very bad gravel road! From Sossusvlei via Solitaire to Swakopmund arriving there on 17th May. From Swakopmund via Okahandja, Windhoek, Rehoboth to Keetmanshoop and Quiver Tree Lodge. Then out through Ariamsvlei on the 21st via Oviston and Gariep Dam back to Everton on the 24th May.

In all we travelled just under 6000kms, of which probably 3500 – 4000kms was on gravel. These roads were generally in fair to good condition, except the Helmeringhausen to Sossusvlei piece, as mentioned above.

The Skipper took everything in its stride, was very easy to tow, and behaved impeccably on the roads even when I was moving all the way across from left to right and back again to find the best sections to travel on. (My car took a bit of strain, being very low to the ground, so the thick sand and stones in a few places did a bit of damage to the underside of the car, but nothing too serious.)

What was a real simple pleasure for me was opening up the Skipper and erecting it, as well as erecting the tent. I could do all of this by myself, although Yvonne’s help with the tent poles was really appreciated! Packing up was just as easy. All-in-all, much easier than our caravan! We really appreciated the simplicity and the fact that I could handle it all by myself!

My average fuel consumption for the whole trip was 8.71 litres per 100km. We did very little travelling around without the Skipper in tow, except at Sossusvlei and Swakopmund, so I am very pleased with the fuel consumption. There was a bit of dust coming in through the door of the Skipper, but I fixed this easily with an extra strip of rubber along the door frame.

At Alte Brucke in Swakopmund we had two other caravaners come around to chat about the Skipper, and both expressed great interest, both saying they would be in contact with you soon! They were very impressed!

So, we are thrilled with the Skipper, and have decided to sell the caravan and keep the Skipper, and not the other way around! Yvonne has even decided that camping is OK!

Kind regards,

Derrick and Yvonne Benson
